IT-BPM to create 2.6M jobs in 5 yrs

THE information technology and business process management (IT-BPM) industry expects to generate 2.6 million direct and indirect jobs in the Philippines over the next five years, a top industry leader said on Monday.
At the 11th International ICT Awards Media Launch held December 5 at the Manila Marriott Hotel, Information
Technology and Business Process Association of the Philippines (IBPAP) president and CEO Ike Amigo said that the ripple effect of direct jobs created by the industry would give rise to more jobs for Filipinos.
According to Amigo, this ripple effect presents “a multiplier of more than three additional jobs for every direct job created by the industry.”
With more and more jobs generated, IBPAP expects the industry to achieve total revenue of $40 billion by 2022 under its Roadmap 2022.
More jobs would mean keeping the Filipino family together, Amigo said.
Asked how the association views the industry’s prospects in light of President Rodrigo Duterte’s anti-American rhetoric, Amigo said in an interview that “there has been no international IT-BPM [company]that has pulled out their business from the country.”
Julian Payne, president of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce (CanCham) in the Philippines, also reiterated in an interview that no single IT-BPM company has withdrawn its business from the Philippines.
At the ICT Awards, Payne said in his speech that the Philippines will continue to lead the world in the IT services industry. He added for that reason, it was important to have the annual ICT awards to recognize these outstanding companies and “maintain their international competitiveness.”
The IT-BPM industry currently employs 1.15 million Filipinos and has generated revenue of nearly $23 billion so far this year, according to IBPAP.
Payne explained that CanCham started doing the awards 10 years ago as the association saw potential in the IT-BPM industry when it was just starting to flourish in the country.
“The ICT awards help the IT-BPM industry,” Amigo agreed.
