Mothers to Thrive in the ‘New Normal’

In this digital age and with the rise of remote work, mothers are no longer just taking care of their homes—they’re working at home.
Gone were the days when women stayed home to fulfill their “duties.” Today, they are taking bold steps to start their own businesses or take leadership positions in the corporate world. And with the “new normal” brought by the pandemic, there are more opportunities for women to succeed in both their family roles and professional careers.
Victoria Alcachupas, TaskUs Vice President for Business Development and Global People Branding is one of those we can call a “Supermom.” She’s a single mom to her 10-year old son, JV. Working for 18 years in the customer experience industry, she admits juggling between career and motherhood was not easy. In a webinar hosted by The Philippine Star’s CareerGuide, she shared that after giving birth, she had to choose between being a full-time mom and taking a four-month scholarship abroad. She chose the latter. “Those were the tougher days,” she said, “But businesses nowadays have changed to benefit women, especially mothers at work.”
A company for women
According to Victoria, more than 50% of TaskUs Philippines’ workforce is women with a significant number being working moms. These numbers led to company benefits that empower women like on-site daycare centers, expanded maternity leaves (additional 15 paid days), a scholarship program, robust healthcare coverage for up to two dependents (inclusive of maternity lab tests), life insurance, and automatically-approved leaves so mothers won’t miss important milestones.
Victoria enjoys working at home and spending more time with her son, JV
TaskUs was one of the companies that immediately transitioned to work-at-home (W@H), which benefited employees especially mothers like her. “On top of ensuring my health and safety, I get to spend more time with my son and have more ‘me time,’” she enthused. This current setup also opened more avenues for stay-at-home moms to pursue their careers. “We will eventually go back to our sites once it’s safe but we are looking for digital-savvy people for our W@H campaigns. We will also provide W@H equipment to our new teammates. This is the future, after all. Companies, together with its employees, need to adapt.”
Victoria finds fulfillment in what she does—providing jobs to more people globally as the company continues to grow and hire. She believes that growing an organization requires investing in people, giving them choices, and letting them thrive in both their personal and professional lives. The key is having a work-life balance. And for working moms, having better and flexible working conditions could be the best Mother’s Day gift in these trying times.
